How to play Gnar
Read the full guide
Treat Gnar’s rage bar like a second ultimate timer: his better games come from making Herald, dragon, and river fights happen in the form he planned for, and recent data supports that he sits between tanks and true snowball tops in how much early lane leverage matters
In lane, throw Q on paths you can actually catch and do not spend mini E just to force one more auto, because boomerang returns and hop discipline are what keep Mini Gnar in control long enough to turn high-rage windows into real threat
Side waves are mostly there to load the next Mega, and the hands-on punish to practice is mini E into transform into immediate R or W when enemies track your current form but forget how close you are to changing
If the fight is about to start and your bar is low, stop trying to force the highlight engage. Use the few seconds before contact to build rage on the nearest safe target or wave, then stand where mini form can still kite and threaten space instead of walking in first. In that spot, you are usually waiting for one of two things: the enemy dive touching your backline so you can turn Mega as they arrive, or a clean wall angle opening once your bar is ready. What usually loses the fight is the panic version—jumping in early, transforming late, and spending Mega after the real window already passed.
While in combat Gnar generates Rage. At maximum Rage his next ability will transform him into Mega Gnar, granting increased survivability and access to new spells.
Gnar throws a boomerang that damages and slows enemies it hits before returning to him. If he catches the boomerang its cooldown is reduced.Mega Gnar instead throws a boulder that stops on the first unit hit, damaging and slowing everything nearby. It can then be picked up to reduce the cooldown.
Gnar's attacks and spells hype him up, dealing bonus damage and granting him Move Speed.Mega Gnar is too enraged to be hyper and instead can rear up on his hind legs and smash down on the area in front of him, stunning enemies in an area.
Gnar leaps to a location and bounces off the head of any unit he lands on, traveling further.Mega Gnar is too large to bounce and instead lands with earth-shattering force, dealing damage in an area around him.
Mega Gnar throws everything around him in a chosen direction, dealing damage and slowing them. Any enemy that hits a wall is stunned and takes bonus damage.
